Paul Krugman and the Neg: an Assessment in the Light of the Dynamics of a “real World” Local System of Firms

چکیده

Since the publication of Krugman's paper on "Geography and Trade" in 1991, a burgeoning literature has developed under the heading New Economic Geography. In the following we shall survey the NEG literature and critically evaluate its contribution relative to earlier work on similar topics. More specifically, we will focus our attention on a model that seems to have given new impulses to the introduction of spatial factors into the economic analysis: Krugman’s model. We will proceed with our assesment analysing if and to which extent the features of the model are effective in investigating a real local system of firms: the Etna Valley, an industrial agglomeration specialized in the production of microelectronic components in the area around the Sicilian town of Catania. What emerged from the critical analysis is that the above model results to be extremely simplified. If, on one hand this may be true for every economic model, on the other, we feel that, in our specific case study, the formalization of the processes of local development does not result to be entirely useful. Indeed, great part of the analysis of the industrial district based on the “industrial atmosphere” (Marshall, 1890) remains out of the picture. Therefore, we find more useful the positions of those authors that not drawing on the deductive methods of theorising and analysing employed by Krugman, nonetheless have managed to enlighten mechanisms that seem to be more apt to investigate dynamics taking place in developing areas. More specifically, they seem to offer more useful insights in the context of non stationary economies where markets are not yet stabilized and therefore are not entirely capable of adequately transmitting incentives and information to the actors in the economy. * Faculty of Development and Society, Sheffield Hallam University. Inflation Dynamics in a Dutch Disease Economy

Abstract In this paper, the effect of foreign sector macro-variable on inflation dynamics and firms’ pricing behavior has been investigated in the context of a small open economy New Keynesian Phillips Curve. This curve is derived and estimated for a developing oil-exporting economy suffering from Dutch Disease. This version of NKPC is an extension of Leith and Malley’s (2007) small open econom...

Evaluating the Efficiency of Firms with Negative Data in Multi-Period Systems: An Application to Bank ‎Data

Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is a mathematical technique to evaluate the performance of firms with multiple inputs and outputs. In conventional DEA models, the efficiency scores of Decision Making Units (DMUs) with non-negative inputs and outputs are evaluated in a special period of time. However, in the real world there are situations wherein performance of firms must be evaluated in multip...

Comparing supply side and demand side options for electrifying a local area using life cycle analysis of energy technologies and demand side programs

The main aim of this paper is to select the best portfolio of renewable energy technologies (RETs) for electrifying an elected area which is not connected to any other grids. Minimizing total costs of the system is considered as the main factor in finding the best decision. In order to make the optimum plan more applicable, the technique of life cycle analysis is applied. This technique takes i...

The Effects of Price Elasticity Dynamics on a Firm’s Profit

This paper studies the dynamic behavior of price elasticity and its effects on the overall profit. Although price elasticity has a significant effect on sales, its dynamics have not been examined so far in pricing models. In this paper, a simple pricing model is suggested in which, price elasticity is considered dynamic. The suggested pricing model is concerned with a monopolist that its object...

A System Dynamics Model for Joint Upstream and Downstream Partner Selection in a Supply Chain Consisting of Suppliers and Retailers

Firms no longer compete as autonomous entities and prefer to join in a supply chain alliance to take advantage of highly competitive business situation. Supply chain coordination has a great impact on strategic partnering and success of a firm in competitive business environment. In this paper, we propose a system dynamics simulation model for strategic partner selection in supply chain. Our mo...
